News - Decision re Placement of Termination Box

The orange fibre optic bundle continues to be installed in the village.

The main fibre line is only one part of three parts of installation. The second part is the “drop” which is the fibre that runs under the lawn from the ditch to the wall of the house. The third part is drilling through the foundation wall to run the fibre inside to the modem.

Part 2 (the drop) is about to begin for those residents who already have the main fibre line in front of their home. Drilling and installation of the main line will continue with the drop
placements following behind. The installation of the drop is done by hand in a process called “stitching” wherein a special tool is used to cut the sod and place the fibre in one motion, a short distance at a time and finish with a small termination box attached to the foundation wall.

Ideally, the box should be placed where the installer that comes to do the indoor installation can simply drill through the wall and run the fibre to the modem. The timing of the drop is unknown and Sentrex (Bell’s contractor) tells me that it takes less than an hour per home.
Sentrex will knock on the door of the home, but if no one is home, the drop will be installed and the box mounted to the exterior wall at Sentrex’s discretion. This usually is located where other utilities (Hydro or Bell landlines) enter the home. However, installing the box at this location may prove undesirable for aesthetic and practical reasons. To avoid the fibre cable being run physically outside and around your home, you should consider the best placement for the box to be installed to allow for a clean and direct installation to your desired modem location. Once the drop box is placed, an inside installer will return to run fibre to the modem installation point. The indoor installer does not have the tools to run the fibre under the lawn, so exposed exterior wire will be the only option at that point.

To prevent this possibility in as many cases as possible, I have created several templates which are attached to this email. The templates are pre-formatted drawings showing a rough house outline and driveway that you can print and put an “X” where the box should be located and showing a preferred path across the lawn to avoid known obstacles like sprinkler lines. Sentrex will run the drop under the lawn even to the back yard, avoiding the requirement for exposed wires on the outside of the house. There are several versions of drawing with driveway left, driveway right, circular driveway etc. Pick the drawing that best represents your home. Print it. Mark it up with your notes, name, street address and phone number and put it in the Hayloft office door mail slot before supper time on Sunday November 15th. I will gather all of the drawings and provide them to Sentrex. As they plan to start the drops on Monday, I need to complete this book by Monday.

If you can’t complete the drawing by the deadline, prepare it and keep it. If you have to leave the house when the installers are nearby, tape the drawing to your front door so Sentrex will know your wishes. Those that can’t print, can pick up a drawing from the office during business hours, or ask a neighbour to print one for you.

Members not able to drop their drawing at the office, may also scan and email them to our
