News - Short Term Rentals

Aug 12th

You will be happy to know that the Airbnb for 102 Bayshore has closed down and will no longer be running.

I was informed by the property manager that was running the Airbnb. I was sending him the emails that were coming from Bayshore and letting him know the issues and probably along with your email to Airbnb probably led him to shut it down.

Hopefully this will be the last of the Airbnb in Bayshore.

Best Regards, Rhonda, 99 Bayshore

Many of you have observed the large number of vehicles parked at 102 Bayshore, from time to time and I believe we are all aware that the owner is advertising the property on Airbnb. There have been several incidents over the past months, mainly experienced by the immediate neighbours, who are increasingly nervous of this situation.

Ramara's proposed (draft) Short Term Rental By-Law banning STRs from Residential Shoreline properties is currently being vetted by their Lawyers, and we have high hopes that it will be enacted in the not too distant future.
In the meantime we are encouraged to advise our Councillor Marg Sharpe of any incidents or concerns.
(Marg is on the ad hoc Committee for the drafting of this By-Law, ably chaired by Corinne Ingall of Lagoon City)
and additionally to report specific incidents to Airbnb on their website. You need to report the date of incident and select from a drop-down menu, the nature of the complaint and then provide some detail, and advice to Airbnb what they could do to address the particular situation. Direct information is shared by Airbnb to their member.

Yesterday I myself reported from my personal email address, an incident that will be explained in the following paragraphs.

Copy of the text of a complaint I Iodged from my personal email address, on the Airbnb website on the afternoon of August 8, 2018
I am the Vice President of the Bayshore Village Association. The person who rents out the house at 102 Bayshore Drive is encouraging multiple people to rent. Sometimes 12 to 20 people (est) in the home.
The renters are not entitled to wander over neighbouring properties or play ballgames, light fires, (which they are doing ) or use any Member facilities of the Village. Our park-like setting is enhanced by our no fence rule, and our residents respect each other’s properties, and do not cross property lines unless invited. Our current problems are caused by an owner (overseas non-resident)who advertises the property on your website.
The latest incident was today. (August 8)We had a complaint about these (approx. 20) renters fishing off docks in our private Marina (Harbour 99) ignoring the No Fishing sign. Moreover they are trespassing on Bayshore Private property in the vicinity of expensive vessels. When approached politely by the Harbour Master to advise them of the rules and trespass concerns some became belligerent and confrontational. This is a quiet, private village with no non-member facilities, no restaurants or shops, and such people as this are not welcome.
Our community feels generally threatened by the regular influx of renters at this property at 102 Bayshore Drive. Sometimes 20+ at any one time, and different people all the time, today and over the past weekend there were 6 cars in the driveway.
In answer to Airbnb’s question what action would you like us to take?
Share our quiet Community's fears for safety and security with your member (who we understand lives off-shore) and discourage the renting of this property entirely, but at the very least limit the numbers in residence at any one time. Have your member advise on their Website, that there are no recreational facilities here in the village and renters must not trespass, and must limit their activities within the property and the yard adjacent to the house down to the waterfront. No tents, no fires, no loud noise.
